Blind Authors And The Supplemental Security Income

Although; I am going back to my typical writing career, before I started running my own website on my own server. However; a blind author can be a self-published author.

There are some issues as you face when you make some dollars publishing and monetizing your books, along with some potential problems what you may encounter.

Typically, writing books require a computer, an internet connection, a self-publishing account, and your tax form on file with a self-publishing platform like Draft2Digital, StreetLib, etc.

Although; if you are dependent on SSI for a long period of time, you may experience limitations for your bank accounts, and even your other financial resources.

Typical Limits For SSI

Social Security Administration has accurate information about SSI and these limitations. For this instance, a single person dependent on SSI has a limit of having $2000 maximum in his/her ban account. This is kind of difficult for a blind person who has other sources of income to start a business, own a house, or any other real property. Couples have a limit of $3000.

However; if your income grows beyond these limits, and your financial stability improves, you don’t need SSI.

What You Can Miss Out When Living Only On SSI?

You can miss out on these following things what people with stable income rely on/benefit:

  • Quality goods
  • Quality foods
  • Quality housing
  • Traveling via public transportation
  • Better health quality
  • Neighborhoods without gun violence
  • Land ownership
  • Investments
  • Larger apartments
  • Going to quality restaurants
  • High quality furniture

What If You Are A New Author Who Starts A Career Of Writing Books?

If you started writing books as a new author; and you about to start your career when living on SSI, you may need to check with your benefits advisor for help, or find a person who manages your case, such as a caseworker who will help with your benefits and even if you have a regular job.

New onboarding authors who are independent authors who are blind must take extra steps to prepare for financial changes. And this is necessary,–if you are tired of having little money to spend, or if you want to have extra money to spend for essentials, and other items.

However; independent authorship is recommended because, you have control of your work altogether.

Say if you wrote your first book, and you successfully published it, and distributed it to public libraries over selling to online books that sell ebooks. Your audience who don’t have money to buy your books rely on public libraries as a way to help discover other content to read, view, or listen. With my approach of distributing my books to public libraries, that gives the poor an opportunity to read my books. If they like my books; they can check it out again, if they don’t like any of my books, they can just return it. The goal is to try out these books what I am writing.

However; if you have a steady income of writing books, and your income grows, your SSI benefits will go away, and you may need to speak to your payee about transitioning to self-supporting model,–after you hopped off SSI. Typically, SSI is funded by people who pay taxes.

Even 1 book in a public library can help some authors who just want to get the experience of having their books read by anyone,–via a preferred audience.

However; SSI is only people who are genuinely disabled, have no employment, and for older citizens. However; SSI can be exploited by loopholes.

Writing and publishing books is fun, but you must create interesting and unique content.

Why NOT Continue Using SSI When You Have A Stable Income When Writing Books And PUblishing Them On A Regular Basis?

Although; to ensure fairness when people become successful, your benefits will slowly fade away. However; people with stable income needed to support themselves.

SSI is exclusively for the poor who don’t have any source of income. However; some parents who have many children often defraud this system. Single mothers are notorious of causing this issue when SSI is defrauded. A single parent with lots of children still needed to work, and combine other sources of income.

When you work and have other sources of income, you are doing the correct thing.

Your taxes are deducted from your payments as a way to support your country where you live inside of. Taxes are important because, they help our public communities be active, run public libraries, hospitals, schools, parks, emergency services, efforts to mitigate natural disasters, repair cities, take care of our ecosystem, and more.
